Drawing and Stitching are intertwined in my world….Making is informed by trust and a fluid approach to paper or fabric.
My drawing basket of ‘tools & materials’, always at the ready, includes everything from colored chalk, graphite and burned sticks, stencils, eye shadow and handmade brushes and more.
In this recent figure drawing, working with graphite sticks adds energy to the lines. Rubbing graphite power through stencils, ( usually used on fabric) was an exciting departure …a new opening for expressing the beautiful tattoos on the model.
Open to unique materials is an aspect that crosses from textiles to paper-
‘What If’ is always whispering to us.
Creativity reminding us to find a balance with intuition for the work to stay fresh.
To drop in and engage is first about trusting we have what we need for the ride we are about to take in any direction. Drawing stays with me as I stitch. On the dragon above, I wanted the white thread to ‘feel’ like a drawn marks…just ‘sketched’ onto the fabric. Planting that seed encouraged a new way to approach hand sewing and following my needle into fabric.
At the onset of a textile project, I want new experiences. Not thinking to much but acting and being present to everything unfolding is sometimes what it takes. From a design perspective, at every layer, the unexpected can be invited in: A loved historic scrap, recycling unlikely materials or a fieldtrip to the Army Surplus store or home dec dept. can yield new ideas and materials to work with.
The first Tyvek Raincoats came from just this kind of out-of-the-box thinking and willingness to explore how a building/constuction material might work in clothing!
We each have a style….staying with the ‘What If” can push those boundaries that may be limiting the next work we create.
Our creativity is bigger than an art project. Building that muscle deepens the creative journey and becomes the lens for everything ….from the way we make food to the way we might dance in relationships.
SO if you draw: Will those gestural marks you make also show up in the stitches you weave into fabric?…and how does everything you may have learned in sewing come into play when you draw or paint?
I appreciate this age, where the history we have is an imprint that comes into our fingers whenever we work. It is the reservoir of unspoken experience that shows up when we reach into the present moment. That feeling of knowing is like nothing else.
