OH FIRST DAYS OF FALL wrap me in textured rich hues arriving on the first whispers of the season!!
One Kantha throw ( 60”x80”) was enough for my scarf, poncho and the 3/4 length vest! The kantha, although many layers of repurposed cottons, is soft and lovely to work on. These beautiful, vintage Kantha Throws are available from MarcyTilton.com in a variety of weights. I feel wrapped in the stories of its history just slipping it on!
The O’Keeffe Pattern was perfect for the 3/4 vest. The Vest has mostly overlapped raw edge seams, finished with hand-stitching. The cotton string, alittle heavier than embroidery floss, was a nice weight and shows well over mostly raw seams and edges. Repeating 2-3 favorite stitches works well.

Designing Tips-Using a set-size throw, is like working a puzzle: Start with what you want first as you choose what you want the front to be, collar and back. Cut them out…no going back! I held back on the sleeves ( originally thinking it might be a coat) …and as I draped the bias remnants on to ‘see’ possible sleeves, the poncho called to me and had to be!! So, no sleeves, poncho instead..then the scarf pieces emerge from the rest of the scraps.
We made it to fall! Exploring new color combinations might be fall coats and scarves or maybe a cashmere sweater to layer on as temperatures drop. Anticipate all the glorious colors in nature, I’m drawn to some of those rich colors in all my work. It’s time to make a basket of bits, pieces and elements to draw my eye towards new projects. Can we ever have toooo much Kantha? wow…that’s hard to imagine. Here are several links to previous posts featuring my kantha garments. Say YES to new colors! and details….this is a time to walk your style. Whether you’re drawing, painting, stitching or making with other favorite materials….Its all about integrating colors and textures as the days get shorter and cooler. Celebrate your Making, Diane
