Textile & Wood: Construction inspires new stories

Textile & Wood: Construction inspires new stories

You know I have a thing about wood …..and sticks in particular. I come from a Swedish family of builders….woodworkers. As a child, the smell of fresh sawdust and handtools my Dad and Morfar (grandfather) used to build our first home with is still memorable in me…and there were always piles of scraps to build my fairyworld from.

Above were afew of my favorite pieces BF, (before the fire)…which have now been taken back by the earth: A small bag, A Eucalyptus basket, an amazing dragon pin (formed by nature!) and my first bracelet rack. The process of weaving together materials that feel like they belong together is always a satisfying process.

This beautiful, discarded maple branch caught my eye more recently and easily transformed into my new bracelet rack.

One of my favorite things about fall and winter are all the new branches that will be trimmed away and might be waiting for me on my next walk in the park!

Piecing fabric doesn’t always lead to a garment….The wallpiece above tried for a year to be a dress. The more I leaned into it, there was a poem and a piece for my wall emerging. It is a good day when even small bits come together.

It seems some of us are ‘rock’ people…and some of us are ‘stick’ people…(and some of us are both) as we collect what is interesting under foot. Folding a branch into a project is one of the ways I’ve always stayed connected with nature.

Fall is a feather that is floating by reminding us the days are getting shorter and it’s time to welcome all the rituals of winter back.

Drawing, hiking, dancing, weaving, baking, painting, writing……Enjoy what makes you happy as you settle into winter. Diane
