APRIL:Thank-You Mr Finch!!!

Thank you Mr Finch! …and thank you Selvedge!

Looking out the window for any movement of time....the Selvedge Newsletter is a welcome sight.

Here in Southern Oregon, it is the perfect time to be prepping the beds, sprouting seeds and getting bulbs in the ground....so I was delighted to see Mr. Finch's 'sprouting bulbs' shared in Selvedge.

Something to make us smile is reason enough to take up a needle and thread.....so for your afternoon making session, Here is a link to the spring bulbs (and a pattern), Mr. Finch is making in his studio. A very inspiring textile creator, you will no doubt be inspired by a tour around his website studio too.

Rummaging for fabrics, trims and string, then creating some collaged fabric was my start. Another creative textilian, Gayle Ortiz, (whose passion involves a lot of cashmere), made this sweet, bulb sculpture in her favorite soft knit.  Oh yeah...way more fun to make with friends too!

I do love making parts...just like in cooking when the outcome of flavors will have more depth if combinations of ingredients are worked first (ie. marinated, grilled, pickled etc), I took that approach to my bulb making=The bulbs were created first and set aside while the sprouting greens were next. Each section was stuffed, then sewn together by adding fabric selvedges as a trim. The 'roots' are a brilliant touch Mr. Finch!  SO many things can work. I choose white school string from mine and Gayle's roped ones are lovely and a great texture!!

Display is often a quintessential aspect of making- In this case, assorted glass jars was the perfect, playful finish and very fun on my Easter table this week.

Thank you Selvedge for continuing to share such a beautiful array of textiles, artists and stories with us online and in the issues on our bookshelves.

Much as I feel compelled to put these sprouting bulbs in the ground…I might need to wear one as a corsage on a favorite, gardening attire

Please share  the creative seeds you are planting with everyone around you this spring....we will all be better for it.  Diane

And once again.. Thank you Mr. Finch!

These are lovely, and perfect for my current situation. Temporarily living in a 3 generation household, all of my sewing supplies are in storage since landing in Colorado. The world has come to a stand still around covid19 tho my mind whirls with ideas. This one I can pull off with a trip to storage and my master list guiding me through my boxes!

Happy Easter, Passover, Day…. we will see the other side soon
