                                               Heathers Projects & Notes-

"Creative retreats provide me with a pause, a time to gather my inspirations, reread my journals, gather materials and ideas that I have set aside for someday. For this photo I gathered samples, threads and papers, bits of wire, of things started but paused, not abandoned just paused and this time in Taos will allow me to undo the pause and continue my exploration, my playing around. This space of play, of being open and receptive, will be influenced possibly defined by what I encounter in the textures, colors and details of the structures and landscape of the area will become part of this vocabulary. Bringing ideas and materials from the past into where I am in the present, and then listening to them and to myself. Where am I physically, metaphorically and spiritually? What speaks to me now? Some may be abandoned, others expanded, new ideas and responses generated, others altered beyond recognition".

"I am drawn to the vessel; she has been my muse for many years. There have been some landmark shifts in my life. I will pause and listen, be in the moment, in the creative process and simply play. When I write simply play, I am a thinker so sometimes I have to work at playfulness, at letting go, of being just in the moment, in whatever is happening at the end of my needle, my paintbrush my crayon. A retreat allows me to get out of my head and into my hands. I'll bring papers, fabrics, wires, needles, scissors and pliers and then glues, resists, inks, stamps and paints and see what calls, what emerges once I am there. On an everyday note - I love polka dots and polka doting my clothing. I will be wearing polka dots and bring all my dots stamps to share with you!

I hope you will bring your collections of materials, ideas and samples that are calling out to you. I look forward to our collective listening, creativity and cross-pollination in the studio!" Heather Hietala

"I'm always inspired with fresh vision on returning to New Mexico for yearly retreats. Color and form find their way into my printed imagery and textile work.....while the high desert air and views are a reminder to breath in, settle in and celebrate the magic and new work that takes form in the studio there. It's the perfect place to play with surface design, stitching, and how it crossing into the textiles you love and want to create". Diane Ericson

Spend the week exploring what inspires you.....we set up a working studio, including surface design area with textile paints, dye na flow, stencils, stamps and other tools for your use.
