BOOKS OF PLACE, by Gayle Erbe-Hamlin
Join Diane and Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, for dynamic week of inspiration, lectures and one-on-one instruction in our adobe conference center studio. Deepen your design experience, and focus on aspects of your work in new ways. We'll be on 'Taos time' as they say, with plenty of opportunity to explore your ideas, and work in small, informal groups in our adobe studio and afternoons sitting with handwork in the stone courtyards.

"I was born on the 100th Meridian in South Dakota. This is the imaginary line that extends north/south through the middle of North America, demarking the western dry lands from the eastern wetter lands. It is a land of big sky and open plains. It might be the reason I have been drawn to the interior of the American West, primarily the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau. Whenever I find myself in this kind of place, I feel I am in my landscape of the heart".
"Over the years I have visited and explored the area of south central Oregon that includes Summer Lake, a remnant of one of the many Pleistocene lakes that covered areas of the West after the end of the Ice Age. After moving to Oregon 5 years ago I learned about a place there called PLAYA. Playa is a geological term that refers to a dry, vegetation-free, flat area at the lowest part of an undrained desert basin. It is a location where ephemeral lakes form during wet periods, and is underlain by stratified clay, silt, and sand, and commonly, soluble salts. Working in fiber and clay, I reflect on the amazing landscape of the area as well as the deep presence of the First People’s who occupied the region more than 14,000 years ago". Gayle Erbe-Hamlin

Exploring place and landscape has become the foundation of my work. During our time together in Taos I want us to explore how we can reflect that rich layered landscape in our work through the use of symbols, iconography and personal mark making using brushes you will make from found materials. We will also experiment with using natural pigments and plants to imbue fiber with the essence of place and incorporate them into your own Book of Place. I look forward to seeing you under the great Southwestern skies!

"Returning to New Mexico always inspires new work and vision influenced by its breath-taking landscapes. I'll be working in fabric, wood and paper, adding surface design and stitching to my work. I love having a garment project to hold and stitch on in the afternoons too. Color and form find their way into my imagery and textile work there while the high desert air and views are a reminder to breath, settle in and celebrate the magic that takes form in the studio there".
