"I use a fluid approach to paint linen and fashion it into garments. Using a projector in a dark room, I cast forms from nature and symbols from math and script onto linen and paint them with black textile paint. I draw on images that evoke the energy of murmuration and the intricacies of nature. I’m inspired by the murmuration of birds because it reflects my creative process. My ideas and images dip, turn, expand and contract in my imagination and flow through my thread and paint into artistic forms. I’ve also invented a stitching style I call swarming, which involves swirling stitch lines along the landscape of garment contours. I have drawn, painted, quilted, spun and woven fabric most of my adult life. I grew up in a small town on the Puget Sound surrounded by forces of water and nature that have shaped my work.
I studied art at Tacoma Community College, where I earned my associate’s degree, and at the Oregon College for Art and Craft in Portland. For the past 33 years, I have lived with my husband in Beaverton, Ore., where we raised three children and I taught preschool and summer art classes for children. I previously spent many years in Washington, Idaho, North Carolina and Massachusetts". Karin Graves
Join Diane Ericson and Karin Graves, for dynamic week of inspiration, lectures and one-on-one instruction in our adobe conference center studio. Deepen your design experience, and focus on aspects of your work in new ways. We'll be on 'Taos time' as they say, with plenty of opportunity to explore your ideas, and work in small, informal groups in our adobe studio and afternoons sitting with handwork in the stone courtyards.
"Returning to New Mexico always inspires new work and vision influenced by its breath-taking landscapes. Karin and I will be exploring and sharing our work printing and brushwork on textiles. Held by thread, the world calls us to collaborate and celebrate new relationships in community and the materials we are drawn to....join us to grow your work and bring in the new. I'll be working in fabric, adding surface design and stitching to my making in our Taos Studio. Color, form and story find their way into my imagery and textile work and garments. There in Taos, where the high desert air and views are a reminder to breath, join us and settle in to celebrate MAKING and the magic that takes form in the studio there".
