Tapestry Weaving is a compelling process with infinite possibilities. I've been making tapestry for more than 40 years since training at Art School in Edinburgh.

Teaching tapestry has taken me all over the world. The tapestries themselves have also made journeys to join  private and public collections. The V&A museum, London, Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow & The Uffizi Gallery, in Florence”.

"My tapestries are finely woven and figurative with decorative elements and sometimes lettering. The designs come together slowly in sketchbooks and often use motifs as symbolism. I use a curved weft known as 'eccentric' or 'coptic'.

"I like to have my design on paper as well as on the sample before beginning on the loom. This opens up scope for discovery and creativity during the making process, which in turn keeps the work alive".           Lynne Curran

 Notes From Diane-

Focusing on incorporating more weaving into my textile work this year will be a joy and I look forward to sharing it with you at the retreat!

"I have explored various kinds of weaving with natural materials, fabrics and fibers over the years and love the process. I appreciate that everything from materials to tools have been adapted through history in many cultures and it can be easy and accessible to anyone interested in exploring it.

Weaving circles through my making process at times when I need to make sense of things. It has helped me find my balance in times when the world (or at least my world) feel conflicted and is in need of grounding. Knowing chaos, that often makes no sense, can be woven together into a new, stronger fabric is quite the metaphor.

I so appreciate Lynne’s design eye and how she is translating her sketches into charming woven stories! The retreat will be the perfect introduction if weaving is new for you…or a springboard into more advanced ways of exploring the techniques you know now.  In addition to the tapestry methods Lynne will be teach, I will be sharing a pin-weaving technique for creating shaped, pattern pieces to incorporate with fabrics for garment making.  A 3-dimensional technique I learned from working with my Mom in the early 70’s.

There will be lots of directions to explore. Lynne and I will have a materials list and some teaching notes for participants to use as a guide for planning and imagining projects. This retreat will be about exploring new combinations of fibers and fabrics….it 's the perfect adventure for Taos this fall"!

"I'm always inspired with fresh vision on returning to New Mexico for yearly retreats. Color and form find their way into my imagery and textile work.....while the high desert air and views are a reminder to breath in, settle in and celebrate the magic and new work that takes form in the studio there". Diane
