        Guest Teacher: Carol Lee Shanks

                        Drawn to Stitch

"The drawings I began last year have become a spark of inspiration for my sewing practice.  One of the things I’ve been doing is transferring the drawings by hand stitching them onto garments.  The hand stitching can become quite tedious so I thought it would be nice to break things up by making a few simple pieces based on my drawn shapes".

"I folded some fabric onto my table, made some quick chalk marks, cut it out and began to sew.  A simple easy beginning.  I was enjoying the spontaneity knowing that soon I would have a new sweater.  But when I put the garment onto my body and went to the mirror to have a look I realized that in my excitement I had failed to honor the cloth.  It wasn’t the shape or style.  It was that I hadn’t found the best solution for the material.  The little voice said:  Follow the cloth; allow it to be your guide; respond to its properties, and it's nuances, as you make your design decisions.  I took the piece apart and began again".

BOAT TUNIC, by Carol Lee Shanks

"For me design decisions happen along the way as the cloth reveals itself during construction.  Random pieces of cut fabric appear and can direct a garments development by becoming  a collar, or a gusset, or maybe a sleeve.  Smaller cloth pieces can be applied as elements of surface design or can be pieced together to build a pocket.  This is a process of looking at what is available, of seeing the possibilities that present themselves and allowing exploration to be part of developing a garment.  My new sweater is simple yet secretly complex." "Deepening my love of piecing fabrics combined with stitched , drawn details and trims is part of re-building my wardrobe. I am always energized by making with new and unexpected materials.  Exploring new combinations and ways to link my mark-making and construction details will carry me into the spring when we come together."
